Elna Collier
Elna Morris Collier, 94, of Albemarle County, passed away at Albemarle Health and Rehab in Charlottesville, Va, on Wednesday, August 7, 2024. She was born April 17, 1930, in Albemarle County, the daughter of the late Earnest and Mattie Morris. She was preceded in death by her husband, Tommie Collier; son, Tommie Lee Collier; daughter, Bonnie Kay Collier; four brothers, Aubrey, Olen, P.J., and Bobby Morris; and one sister, Frances Buttner. Elna lived in Charlottesville for over 50 years before moving to the Meadows in Crozet.
She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Rachel Collier of Crozet; two grandsons, Tommie Allen Collier/Jen Wood of Greenwood, James Benjamin/Nicole Collier of Scottsville; four great-grandsons, Devin Scott/Skyler Collier, Corey Allen Collier/Brianna Campbell, Konner Morgan Collier, and Daniel Christopher/Haliey Helmes; two great-granddaughters, Sarah Elisabeth and Autumn Grace Collier; three great-great grandsons, Waylon and Asher Collier, and Cooper Helmes, and a sister-in-law, Ruth Morris, also a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins and a special friend Frances who lived next to her at the Meadows and helped her in so many ways.
Elna was an active member of the Southside Church of God in Charlottesville for many, many years until her health prevented her from doing so. She was a past President of the church’s Ladies Auxiliary and served in that position for over 31 years and was the Sunday School Secretary for many years. She helped with many fundraising functions for the church, such as peeling apples for apple butter making, cooking for the county fair, and helping make the delicious Easter eggs that the church sold for many years. She was well known for her many delicious cakes, especially her Mile High Coconut cake.
She was also a caregiver to many. For 42 years, she cared for her handicapped daughter, Bonnie, and provided care for other family members who suffered health issues. She also provided in-home childcare and touched the lives of many children who passed through her door.
She loved to play jokes on others, looked forward to her weekly/daily card games with friends at the Meadows, was an avid collector of family history, and had a beautiful smile. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
The family will receive friends at Nortonsville Church of God on Wednesday, August 14, 2024, from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.
A funeral service will be held at Nortonsville Church of God on Thursday, August 15, 2024, beginning at 11 a.m., with Pastor Greg Payne and Pastor Larry Hudson officiating.
Arrangements are entrusted to Batten Funeral Home of Ruckersville, Virginia. We have set up an online guestbook at www.battenfuneral.com for those who wish to share their memories of Elna or express their condolences. Your words will be a source of comfort and strength for the family during this time.
