The Virginia Press Association held its annual awards banquet in Charlottesville May 4, honoring journalists and publications throughout Virginia for excellence in writing, photography, design, and advertising during the calendar year 2023. The Crozet Gazette picked up eight awards—six within its circulation-group-size category, and two Open awards for which the Gazette competed against all publications in the state.

Theresa Curry won first prize for a feature writing portfolio for articles about an extreme outdoorsman, a culinary historian, and an author who wrote about unsolved mysteries. She won a third-place award in the Open category for feature story writing, also for the outdoorsman story.

Allie Pesch won first prize for “education, churches, and organizations” advertising.

Lisa Martin won first prize in the Open category for a portfolio of education writing for stories about academic achievement gaps, school renaming, and reduced core instruction in county schools. She won second place for a second collection of education writing, second place for public safety writing, and third place for government writing.

Malcolm Andrews won a second-place award for “personality or portrait photo” photography.

We deeply appreciate all of our talented staff and our wonderful readers and advertisers. Thanks for supporting the Gazette!
