Some 30 volunteers from Victory Hill Church in Crozet swept and raked Crozet’s main intersection at the railroad trestle and cleared the trails in Mint Springs Valley Park of winter debris as a community service project March 21. The congregation met for a 30-minute service at the church on Patterson Mill Road and then set out to work.
“This is our outreach emphasis month,” explained pastor Steve Mills. “We want the community to know our heart is to reach out to the community.” The church had held a blood drive the Sunday before. They chose the Dairy Queen intersection for attention “because this is one of the most visible places in our community,” Mills said.
They swept the sidewalks, washed the concrete pads at the gas pumps and cleared the asphalt surfaces with a leaf blower.
Bre Bishop, a nursing student at Piedmont Virginia Community College, picked up a daunting number of cigarette butts. “It’s kinda gross,” she admitted.
Stephanie Stewart singlehandly swept the sidewalks under the trestle. “I’m getting a lot of ‘thank yous’ [from passing cars],” she reported.
“We got everything out of the corners,” added Paul Willis.
“We’re glad to do it,” reiterated Mills.
